While Kristen Bell prepares to take the stage as the first ever host of
the SAG Awards, let’s take a look at the nominees, as I make my predictions
TELEVISION PREDICTIONS
Outstanding
Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series
THE CROWN
GAME OF THRONES
THE HANDMAID’S TALE
STRANGER THINGS
THIS IS US
Normally I would say that the Guild will repeat a STRANGER THINGS win,
as they often tend to repeat winners. However, this year, THE HANDMAID’S TALE
is extremely strong, and with fantastic performances by even the supporting
cast. So I think that’s the ensemble that’ll win.
Outstanding
Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series
BLACK-ISH
CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM
GLOW
ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK
VEEP
VEEP is still quite relevant talked about. Even though it’s quite
possible that the Guild sticks with the ensemble that has won this for the last
three years—ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK—I have a feeling they’ll finally award the
stellar performances by the cast of VEEP.
Outstanding
Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series
Millie Bobby Brown, STRANGER THINGS
Claire Foy, THE CROWN
Laura Linney, OZARK
Elisabeth
Moss, THE HANDMAID’S TALE
Robin Wright, HOUSE OF CARDS
Elisabeth Moss, for sure! The SAG were not so generous to her during the
MAD MEN days, but I don’t think they’ll be able to overlook her devastating
performance as a handmaid.
Outstanding
Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series
Jason Bateman, OZARK
Sterling K.
Brown, THIS IS US
Peter Dinklage, GAME OF THRONES
David Harbour, STRANGER THINGS
Bob Odenkirk, BETTER CALL SAUL
This is a tough one. There can’t be a repeat winner here, since none of
these roles have won before. Since last year’s winning role was a supporting
role (John Lithgow for THE CROWN), I wouldn’t rule even Harbour out this year.
Brown has a winning streak going, but he hasn’t won an Actor for THIS before.
Still, I think the odds are in his favor. I think it’ll be Brown.
Outstanding
Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series
Uzo Aduba, ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK
Alison Brie, GLOW
Jane Fonda, GRACE AND FRANKIE
Julia
Louis-Dreyfus, VEEP
Lily Tomlin, GRACE AND FRANKIE
If this was the Globes, I would predict Alison Brie, but the SAG loves
repeating winners, so I’m going with Julia Louis-Dreyfus. I predict this
because the buzz surrounding VEEP is still strong, while people have
practically forgotten about ORANGE (Aduba has won this one twice before).
Outstanding
Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series
Anthony Anderson, BLACK-ISH
Aziz Ansari, MASTER OF NONE
Larry David, CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM
Sean Hayes, WILL
& GRACE
William H. Macy, SHAMELESS
Marc Maron, GLOW
This category can go in any direction. One could say that Macy or Hayes
could win, since they’ve both won multiple times before. David hasn’t won
before, so he’s out. Ansari won the Globe, but he’s had bad press recently, so
maybe he’s out too. Anderson could win, but I doubt it. Maron won’t. I think
Hayes will win. He’s won thrice before for this role, and the SAG is probably
just waiting to hand him more Actor statuettes for it (remember Alec Baldwin
winning seven years straight?).
Outstanding
Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries
Laura Dern, BIG LITTLE LIES
Nicole Kidman,
BIG LITTLE LIES
Jessica Lange, FEUD: BETTE & JOAN
Susan Sarandon, FEUD: BETTE & JOAN
Reese Witherspoon, BIG LITTLE LIES
The Emmy and the Golden Globe went to her, and the Actor will go to
Nicole Kidman too. I don’t think anyone predicts otherwise.
Outstanding
Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries
Benedict Cumberbatch, SHERLOCK
Jeff Daniels, GODLESS
Robert De Niro, THE WIZARD OF LIES
Geoffrey Rush, GENIUS
Alexander
Skarsgård, BIG LITTLE LIES
It’s their year. BIG LITTLE LIES will win here. Yes, even though Skarsgård
has a supporting role.
