TELEVISION
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) like to
throw all new titles up in the air and then see which one goes the highest. Some
of the year’s most talked-about series generally make it to the Golden Globes
list of nominees, even if they don’t find themselves in the more conservative Primetime
Emmy Awards list. This year is no different. The only returning series
nominated for Television Series – Drama is GAME OF THRONES. The four other
nominees are all new. Here’s what I think the outcome will be in the TV categories:
Best
Television Series — Drama
THE CROWN
GAME OF THRONES
STRANGER THINGS
THIS IS US
WESTWORLD
Last year’s winner—MR. ROBOT—is out of the running
this time. GAME OF THRONES could finally win, since it never has. I would be
thrilled if THE CROWN wins. However, I think it’s the year for STRANGER THINGS.
Best
Television Series — Musical or Comedy
ATLANTA
BLACK-ISH
MOZART IN THE JUNGLE
TRANSPARENT
VEEP
There have been new winners every year since 2011, so
I think it will go to BLACK-ISH, or ATLANTA. I would be very happy if either
MOZART or VEEP win. The HFPA could break their streak by giving it to MOZART a
second consecutive year.
Best
Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
AMERICAN CRIME
THE DRESSER
THE NIGHT MANAGER
THE NIGHT OF
THE PEOPLE V. O.J. SIMPSON: AMERICAN CRIME STORY
It’s THE PEOPLE V. O.J.’s year, for sure.
Best
Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Drama
Caitriona Balfe, OUTLANDER
Claire Foy, THE CROWN
Keri Russell, THE AMERICANS
Winona Ryder, STRANGER THINGS
Evan Rachel Wood, WESTWORLD
I would love to see Keri Russell winning for THE
AMERICANS. It is her first Globe nomination for the show, so it’s not
impossible. However, I think this is the year for STRANGER THINGS. This one
will go to Winona Ryder.
Best
Performance by an Actor in a Television Series — Drama
Rami Malek, MR. ROBOT
Bob Odenkirk, BETTER CALL SAUL
Matthew Rhys, THE AMERICANS
Liev Schreiber, RAY DONOVAN
Billy Bob Thornton, GOLIATH
Rami Malek didn’t win last year, so I think this is
his year for MR. ROBOT.
Best
Performance by an Actor in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy
Anthony Anderson, BLACK-ISH
Gael García Bernal, MOZART IN THE JUNGLE
Donald Glover, ATLANTA
Nick Nolte, GRAVES
Jeffrey Tambor, TRANSPARENT
This is a tough one. I want Gael Garcia Bernal to win.
He’s so good on MOZART. However, there is a possibility that the HFPA will
revert to Jeffrey Tambor this year. Anthony Anderson’s been nominated for the
first time for BLACK-ISH, so it could be him. But I’m going to go with Tambor.
Best
Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy
Rachel Bloom, CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, VEEP
Sarah Jessica Parker, DIVORCE
Issa Rae, INSECURE
Gina Rodriguez, JANE THE VIRGIN
Tracee Ellis Ross, BLACK-ISH
I doubt Rachel Bloom will win again in this category,
since the Globe hasn’t gone to a repeat winner in this category since 2008.
Issa Rae could be this year’s winner. However, given how generous the HFPA was
with Sarah Jessica Parker when SEX AND THE CITY was on, I think Parker’s going
to win herself this one.
Best
Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for
Television
Riz Ahmed, THE NIGHT OF
Bryan Cranston, ALL THE WAY
Tom Hiddleston, THE NIGHT MANAGER
John Turturro, THE NIGHT OF
Courtney B. Vance, THE PEOPLE V. O.J. SIMPSON:
AMERICAN CRIME STORY
Courtney Vance is winning this one. If there’s a
chance he doesn’t win, I think the upset could be Tom Hiddleston.
Best
Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for
Television
Felicity Huffman, AMERICAN CRIME
Riley Keough, THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE
Sarah Paulson, THE PEOPLE V. O.J. SIMPSON: AMERICAN
CRIME STORY
Charlotte Rampling, LONDON SPY
Kerry Washington, CONFIRMATION
I wish Felicity Huffman wins, but I’m quite sure this award
is pretty much Sarah Paulson’s.
Best
Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series, or
Motion Picture Made for Television
Sterling K. Brown, THE PEOPLE V. O.J. SIMPSON:
AMERICAN CRIME STORY
Hugh Laurie, THE NIGHT MANAGER
John Lithgow, THE CROWN
Christian Slater, MR. ROBOT
John Travolta, THE PEOPLE V. O.J. SIMPSON: AMERICAN
CRIME STORY
Sterling K. Brown could win for PEOPLE V. O.J., like
he did at the Emmys. However, it would be a shame if John Lithgow doesn’t take
it away for his outstanding turn as Prime Minister Winston Churchill. I suspect
the HFPA will not disappoint.
Best
Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series, or
Motion Picture Made for Television
Olivia Colman, THE NIGHT MANAGER
Lena Headey, GAME OF THRONES
Chrissy Metz, THIS IS US
Mandy Moore, THIS IS US
Thandie Newton, WESTWORLD
Lots of first-time roles nominated here. If the HFPA swings
towards THIS IS US in Series – Drama, there’s a good chance Chrissy Metz wins
this one. But I think it’ll be Thandie Newton.
MOTION PICTURES
As for the motion picture nominees, I have only seen La La Land so far, so it’s a little
difficult to gauge the outcome. I am quite sure La La Land will win Motion Picture – Musical Or Comedy, Music, and
Song. Damien Chazelle stands a good chance. Maybe even Ryan Gosling could win.
However, the more deserving Emma Stone faces stiff competition from eight-time
Golden Globe winner Meryl Streep, who will also be receiving the Cecille B.
DeMille Award tonight. The motion picture nominees are:
