The 70th annual Golden Globe Awards are just about a
day away. While I’m putting my money on Lincoln and Les Misérables as the big
winners this year in film, here I’m going to talk about how I think the mainstream
TV categories will turn out
Best Series – Drama
They gave it to MAD MEN three years in a row, before going with BOARDWALK EMPIRE and then HOMELAND. However, I don’t think either of those two will win it this year. I think it’ll be one of the first-time-nominated DOWNTON ABBEY or THE NEWSROOM.
Best Series – Musical or Comedy
They gave it to GLEE for two consecutive, before finally recognizing MODERN FAMILY. I think they’ll stick with the latter this year as well, but if their love for musicals is something to consider, SMASH might just turn out to be the dark horse here, seeing as how this is its first nomination here.
Performance by an Actress in a TV Series – Drama
I won’t apply the same logic here as I did in the previous one, even though the last five Globes in this category have gone to different actresses, simply because the competition isn’t as tight, and I think Claire Danes (HOMELAND) will walk away with it again this year.
Performance by an Actor in a TV Series – Drama
For the last five years, it’s been different actors who have won this award. I think it’ll be someone new again this year. Damian Lewis (HOMELAND) or Jeff Daniels (THE NEWSROOM) would most likely win. I think it’ll be Daniels, which will increase the suspense right before Best Series Drama is announced.
Performance by
an Actress in a TV Series – Comedy or Musical
Similarly, Tina Fey could win because 30 ROCK is
ending, but going by how the three different ladies have won this one over the
last three years, I suspect it’ll be Julia Louis-Dreyfus (VEEP). Lena Dunham
(GIRLS) could also win, but I think Louis-Dreyfus deserves it more.
Performance by an Actor in a TV Series – Comedy or Musical
Will Alec Baldwin could win this one, since 30 ROCK is ending, but I doubt the HFPA will go that way. I also doubt that they’ll give the award to Jim Parsons (THE BIG BANG THEORY) or Matt LeBlanc (EPISODES) a second time. This year, I suspect it’ll be Louis CK (LOUIE).
Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role – Series, Mini-Series, TV Movie
I’m quite certain Maggie Smith will win in this category. Again, last year’s winner, Jessica Lange (AMERICAN HORROR STORY) hasn’t been nominated here, so there’s no chance of a repeat win. I would like to see Sofia Vergara (MODERN FAMILY) also finally win in this category, but Smith would definitely deserve it.
Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role – Series, Mini-Series, TV Movie
This is Mandy Patinkin’s first nomination for HOMELAND, so it might just be him. Ed Harris (GAME CHANGE) is also a likely contender, but I would like to see Eric Stonestreet (MODERN FAMILY) finally winning here. Last year’s winner, Peter Dinklage (GAME OF THRONES) hasn’t been nominated, and based on the last few wins in this category, the HFPA has done justice to comedies, so who knows!
Let’s check back here after the awards. I hope I don’t
turn out to be completely wrong! Who do you think will win big in television at
the Golden Globes this year?
Wow you almost predicted all correctly!
